GO!

CANON: The MCU Thor and The Avengers films. It might be easier to go with an external character history on this one, so behold: the pride of Asgaaaaaaaa – Wiki.

CANON TIMEPOINT: post-The Avengers, pre-Thor II. So, pretty much as he's en route to his so much awesomer Asgard, muzzled evil overlord wannabe in tow.

AGE: ...he's of a kind that prides a human lifespan, give or take 5,000 years, so those particular waters are a little muddied. He looks as if he's in his early thirties, but I hear tell it goes against royal Asgard etiquette to ask whether daily moisturizing, good genes or his weight in Botox brought about that joyful outcome.

HOUSE: this was a hilariously difficult decision, because while his overall personality still more or less fits his namesake House cookie mould, he's really matured throughout the films and he's started to grow out of his penchant for solving each and all of life's problems by way of weapon, fist, fang, and big toenail. He's certainly come to appreciate people (both his and those of the mortal world) and to acknowledge his duties, and nowadays he's often guided by his feelings for Jane Foster – so there are quite a few nods to the Houses of Sygin, Heimdall and Freya. That said, I think I'll still suggest House Thor just because it seems to best match his core personality, from his mad warrior skillz to his good-natured humour.

POWER: strength!

PERSONALITY: not for the first time, Cracked.com sums it best. No. Really. Bless him. As the proud incarnation of every blonde and jock joke across several universes, Thor feels the burden of being just one brother complex short of a Standard Comedy Relief gig.

But okay, let's be fair to the mighty brawn-bearer: most of the time, Thor loud. Thor happy. Thor angry. Thor, with relation to his love interest, Tarzan. But contrary to popular belief, Thor not necessarily stupid. Yes, he's often incapable of the kind of political machinations his brother excels at, but he nonetheless has a passably sharp intuitive ability that helps him understand how someone is likely to behave. He doesn't know wires and wheels (sometimes, you really wonder whether he's even discovered them), but, like every shoujo heroine before him, he knows battle plans, he knows armies, he knows hearts, and he knows people.

Sadly, this tendency sometimes comes in conflict with his otherwise black-and-white worldview, making it especially dramatic for him when people he’d assigned to a particular "Naughty" or "Nice" list fail to act according to their cookie mould 24/7: the warriors of Jotunheim can't possibly have a point, or a legitimate reason for discontent, because they're, you know, Jotuns, and they must surely have a lifelong Evil Overlord Magazine subscription; by the same token, Loki can't possibly mean genocide against humanity, because he's an Asgardian, so surely he's just. Playing around. With glowing extra-terrestrial weapons of mass destruction. It's this sort of wildly biased perspective that Thor's paid for in the past, and that he still has many a light-year to go in order to correct. Points to him for trying - but he's definitely not quite there yet.

Something good does come out of Thor's binary ethics, at least: if every world needs its Big Bad, Thor's doing his absolute best to become the multiverse's Chosen Protagonist. He stands, flies, and now and then gets punched by exceptionally green friends in the name of Honour, Justice, and Defending the Weak. He is heir to Asgard, and he goes to every conceivable, non R-rated chemically induced length to make his father and his king proud. He does not falter, he does not abandon his comrades or his word, and he does not abide humiliating an enemy, or confronting one on unfair ground. He gives his allegiance freely and easily to what he believes to be the rightful cause, and he's almost too eager to saddle himself with the responsibility of Asgard and humanity's care. Hel(l), by the end of Thor, once he's finally grasped the good ol' with great power comes great responsibility, Thor's commitment to his purpose and his people reaches the point of unrepentant self-sacrifice.

Speaking of humans – he greatly enjoys them. Sometimes with the cooing-prone fondness most aim at oversized pets, but he enjoys them. And their shiny, shiny mugs. It’s very difficult to tell to which realm Thor is more loyal between Asgard and Midgard: he starts Thor with an explicit belief that Asgard >>>> all, best believe, but a forcible vacation among mortals seems to have cured him of his superiority issues. He doesn't always live in love, peace and harmony with human technology ( ...somehow, for the representative of a species that's supposedly got access to infinitely more intricate gear?!), but he certainly appreciates the human spirit: he voices high praise for humans in The Avengers, aaaaaand he never does stop batting his lashes at a one Miss Jane Foster.

In the end, this can be said to be Thor's greatest weakness: his attachment. Sure, the recklessness, stubbornness, short-sightedness, and the massive, stereotypical WARRIOR!!!!!GRRRRRR!!!! arrogance that he displayed at the beginning of Thor, while toned down, are still alive and well enough to get him in the occasional jam. They're hardly flaws to underestimate, especially where his childish inclinations to whine ( ...at his brother, because why did Daddy scold me, Loki) and get the last punch / word ( look, the Ken doll said to put the hammer down, Asgard does not take orders from Ken dolls) are concerned. But the real problem is, again, and with feeling: he cares. He cares enough to give second and third chances, and he cares enough to put himself massively and repeatedly on the line for the people who might not deserve it. What's worse ( and especially regrettable for his future ruling prospects) is that there's no real, consistent and enduring element of subterfuge about him: he 'talks big,' and, sadly, whether threat or vow, he more likely than not means it. The guy's got a big heart - and them big hearts inevitably one day make even bigger targets.

NETWORK SAMPLE:

video;

[ The Nick Fury school of line-facing doesn't quite teach you what to do when you're shooting an official transmission to the background of an alien city's outdoors, but going by Thor's why-me look, he's (un)prepared to wing this one. ]

There were three small tokens given to my care: a cube, a hard leash and its man. I do not thank harm brought against them. Return them and...

[ A pause, because clearly the failure for someone, anyone and/or Bueller to reply in roughly 3 seconds since the beginning of this footage means the world expects a bribe. 'lo, the acknowledging half-smile, for Thor is a man of the world. When he's on vacation. ]

I know your way. You wish for proof of kindness before giving answer. Very well. Your world is pale and weak - and barren. I shall give you storm and water for a good harvest.

[ Wait, what is this that he's raising? Can it be? The mighty Mjölnir, prop/hammer extraordinaire? Why, so it is, and Thor is quick to wave it in the air, presumably S.O.S-ing thunder and lightning and maybe fireworks, too. ]

A good...

[ waving... ]

...strong...

[ ...still waving... ]

...golden...

[ ...yeeeah, nothing beats good exercise, right... ]

...very... handsome...

[ ...your arm hasn't fallen off, Thor, keep waving... ]

...harvest...

[ ...somewhere out there, a cricket is vaguely meditating on its life and its choices before interrupting with the traditional awkward noises.

Thor takes a moment to look at the large hammer in his hand. Then at the sky. Hammer. Sky. Hammer. Sky. Nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch. He borrows the sense to shed his apparently busted weapon, before smiling at the camera again, this time all too sheepishly. ]

...shall I bless your cows before your crops?

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:

They are not human, nor human in likeness. That saves the city.

These enemies of theirs, the Chitauri – they have nothing in them that recommends compassion, nothing to stay Thor's hand when it reaches for Mjölnir, the thunder and lightning when they're roused, and summoned down. The creatures have served Loki with valour, and for this he finds himself in debt, because the old ways would not have his brother's guard go without Thor's explicit gratitude. It is due. Regard is due, honour is due, the absence of insult, or humiliation to the Chitauri's fallen is -- earned. He is no prince to be followed in battle, if he cannot afford respect to every man who takes arms, no matter under whose banner.

This means nothing by the end of it: the Chitauri are not human. They are not of Asgard. They are not spared. He culls each creature that bars his path, and a horde of them on more than one occasion, when his lightning weaves a hard net and catches them unaware. This is war, and war casualties are just: the Lady Sif and the Warriors Three know it and would all agree - even Fandral, who is, among them, the kinder. Soldiers stand and soldiers die, and what Thor did now was no better, and no lesser than what he has done in the past. This, he will tell himself, and he will sleep the better for it: protection calls for death. His humans are under siege, and their invaders will take what punishment is cast upon them. The choice is his with ease: he recalls Jane Foster, and what might become of her if he does not act now, and he strikes.

But the course of it changes once the tinned man dares the skies and downs the mother of them, the ship and point of command. There is yet battle to be done, someone says it, and he remembers not whom – the captain, perhaps, or death's woman, or perhaps Thor himself – only hereon, it's hardly battle at all, but execution. Lessened of strength, will and direction, the Chitauri give no better than children: they react as instinct demands of them, erratic, strange and frightened, all wild screams and blood thirst. Some coil, cry and claw in a rage, and they make the easier kills, the ones Thor needs not ponder hours after. Some scurry, or mean to yield, or seek his mercy, and to these, he is loathe to have nothing to give. This is the ugly work, the same he’d have once prized in Jotunheim and thought it his reward, with no concern for its equity. Things are different now. He is different, and so when one of the Chitauri glances Thor's way with blind-born eyes, he thinks to ask whether it knows it's been abandoned. He hasn't the time; the thing must die. But the doubt finds seed in him: are they defenders, if they do not allow surrender, or mere butchers?

The humans cannot tell him. They are brave, but young, and still search strife with each another, let alone with nomads that walk their grounds and wish to see it burned. The man of iron, the archer and the shield bearer win their war now, and speak of it later. Their green friend and his old eyes must see, but the monster makes the choice, and the man need not consider. The red woman is the most hardened of all: she, Thor thinks, has spied the exact moment when rightful battle turned to slaughter; and she did and does her duty, all the same. Erik Selvig would know what to make of this – but Erik Selvig will be eaten by a guilt too great for one frail man to bear, and Thor hasn't the heart to give it reason more.

There is one who knows, one who owes answer, one who has given him wisdom time and time again. But he does not ask Loki. He will not ask of Loki, not now and not again. His brother is his burden and his failure and his greatest oversight, and by the gods that have born them, Thor will see Loki pay and make amends. The wise Silvertongue will answer in trial before Odin, kin and kind, and he will rue, and he will suffer, and not once will Thor allow him despair. Loki will rise again and resume his rightful place, and by everything that rules this world and the next, Loki will not fail Asgard again. But not now. Now, Loki betrays, Loki laughs, and Loki rebels, and all this he does with great relish. Loki cannot give him truth, only injury.

Besides, he does not need his answer: Asgard sent him on assignment, the humans asked for service – he did well by both, and so the matter stands. But he no longer binds himself to his oaths of old, and he cannot partake of carnage for the sheer, unbridled sport of it. That time has passed: he does not need his answer, but he wants it.

The Chitauri were not human-like, so he can be the future liege, who kills them fast now, and has the sense to mourn the measure after.

And perhaps, one day, he will learn to be a king of skill, who need not shed blood to protect his realm at all.

HO HO HO!

Thor, Santa is putting you on his nice list this year, seeing as you're a defender of truth and justice and everything. Though it doesn't hurt that you finally decided to get rid of that awful winged hat, and also apparently Mrs Santa finds Chris Hemsworth "super dreamy", whoever he is. But anyway, the elves would like to let you know how much they enjoy you in Asgard. You've done an amazing job balancing humor with Thor's characterization, always remembering equal components of each. Every thread of his is great, and you clearly put a lot of thought into each one. Keep up the great work!
